“Dessine-moi le français”

I - Presentation of the competition

1°/ “Dessine-moi le français” competition presentation

The competition “Dessine-moi le français” (Draw me the French language) aims to test the ability and knowledge of Botswana’s high school students in French.

The participants will have to submit a short essay written in French illustrated by a drawing or a collage (pasted photos, pictures, etc.).

2°/ Who can participate?

This contest is open to form 4 and form 5 students of public or private high schools in Botswana.

The candidates should be supervised by a Teacher of French during the preparatory phase and must remain under the responsibility of the School Head.

3°/ How to participate?

The contributions must be done by a pair of contestants, one male one female, from the same school. Individuals or a pair of single-sex candidates will be declined.

Participation in this contest does not require any preliminary registration.

II - What are the different stages of this contest?

1°/Pre-selection of the finalists

In every school, one or several Teachers of French will have to make a pre-selection of the three best projects and pass them on before the deadline (see below).

2°/Submission of the projects

The Teachers of French will have to submit the pre-selected projects before March 18th 2016 either by sending for each team an e-mail at cad.gaborone-amba@diplomatie.gouv.fr with a digital copy of the contribution attached or by delivering the contributions directly to the Alliance Française de Gaborone (Ext. 10, Plot 2939, Mobuto Road ; +267 395 1650) within opening hours (8h00-12h30 / 14h00-17h30 during the working weeks or from 09h00-12h00 on Saturdays).

In case of submission by e-mail, the text must be recorded under a standardized format (Word, PDF, and TXT) with a photo of the related illustration (drawing or collage) of good quality and in “.JPG” format.

Only originals or good quality digital copies of the contributions will be considered.

Fax registrations are not accepted.

3°/ Nature of the expected contributions

Each team will have to draft a text in French on their perception of this language and to illustrate it with a sketch, paint or a collage…

Each project will have to meet the following criteria:

  • The text must be drafted in French, of 250 words min and 500 words max, typed on one side of a sheet of A4 paper (21cm x 29,7cm);
  • The illustration must be done on one side of another sheet of A4 paper ;
  • No voluminous or relief composition will be accepted (no sculpture);
  • The total of the two elements (text and illustration) should not exceed the size of an A3 paper;
  • On the back of each those two sheets the contestants must write the following information: first name and last name of both members of the team, the name of their school as well as the contact details of the Teacher of French (e-mail, telephone number, etc.).
  • In case of submission by e-mail, each project must clearly contain the mention of the names of the two members of the team, the name of their school as well as the contact details of their Teacher of French (e-mail, telephone number, etc.).

The contributions will be published on Internet on the following site:

The best contributions will be displayed in the premises of the Alliance Française de Gaborone for the award ceremony (March 22nd, 2016).

Participants who wish to get their contributions back must pick them up at the Alliance Française de Gaborone between March 23rd and April 15th, 2016. Beyond this last date, the remaining contributions will be considered as belonging to the Alliance Française.

Any form of plagiarism will result in elimination from the competition.

4°/Deliberations of the jury

On the 21st of March 2016, the pre-selected contributions will be assessed by a jury panel composed of representatives from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, University of Botswana’s Department of French, the Alliance Française de Gaborone and the French Embassy.

The jury will meet behind closed doors to assess the contributions on the basis of various criteria, among which creativity, originality, risk-taking, relevance, consistency with the theme, syntax…

The jury’s decision is final and no queries or appeals will be accepted.

The top three teams will be publicly announced the next day, during the award ceremony.

5°/Awards ceremony

An award ceremony will be held on March 22nd, 2016 in the premises of the French Alliance de Gaborone, in the presence the Ambassador of France, Botswana government officials, especially High representatives from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, Head masters, Teachers of French, UB lecturers, as well as representatives of the civil society and the diplomatic corps.

All the participants in the competition “Dessine-moi le français” and their Teachers of French are welcome to attend this ceremony.

Each member of the top three teams will receive a reward as recognition of his/her work.

The name of the winners “Dessine-moi le français” contest and their works will be published in the media and on various official sites, such as the French Embassy's Internet
